In high school I convinced myself that the path to sensuality was through full luscious lips. Taking cue from my girlfriend Mari, who made a point of pursing and re-glossing and pursing and re-glossing, throughout the entire day, my out-turned lips became a thing of normalcy.
I did it everywhere: at the kitchen table, on the train, in class, at political meetings, house parties- EVERYWHERE. Eventually I didn’t even realize I was doing it. No longer did it have anything to do with sensuality, rather, it was just how my lips looked.
I don’t know when I stopped. Perhaps when I stopped drawing myself.
